Abstract
Objective : This study was carried out in an attempt to investigate the association among severity of dependence, attachment style and alexithymia in 128 alcohol inpatients.

Methods : Attachment style and alexithymia were assessed using self-report questionnaires of Experiences in Close Relationship (ECR) and Toronto Alexithymia Scales (TAS), respectively, The severity of alcohol dependence were assessed using Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST-K) and Addiction Severity Index (ASI).

Results : Fearful type was highest prevalent, followed by dismissing, secure and preoccupied types among 4 types of attachment style. Alexithymia was present in 37.5 % of the subjects. MAST-K scores were significantly higher in fearful and dismissing than in secure and preoccupied types (p=0.005). Among six sections of ASI the scores of alcohol use section were significantly higher in fearful and dismissing than in secure and preoccupied types (p=0.005), and the scores of legal status sections were significantly higher in fearful and preoccupied than in secure and dismissing types (p=0.031). There was no significant relation between alexithymia and MAST-K scores, but, the scores of alcohol use section of ASI were significantly higher in the present of alexithymia (p=0.02).

Conclusions : These results suggest that the assessment of alexithymia and attachment styles should be performed in the diagnostic evalution of alcoholic patients. This will help make a plan of psychosocial treatment for alcoholic patients.
